The Hop Beer Shop is Chelmsford's 'OG' independent beer retailer, opening in 2014 as Essex's First Micropub so they had to be a part of the beer mile, and a perfect place to start as they open everyday at midday.

Usually stocking 4 Cask, 2 Keg plus a range of bottles and cans available. Belgian beers available year round and a small range of craft beer too. This cozy little pub is the perfect start to the beer mile.

Recently taken over by Ed Barnes, who own's the Hopsters chain of botteshops, in 2024, The Hop Beer Shop's future has been secured.

Hopsters, described when they opened in 2018 as 'An Aladdin's cave of Craft Beer', has been a staple part of the Chelmsford Craft Beer scene offering hundreds of Craft Beers, as well as spirits, Belgian beers and always has a couple Keg beers on tap. They can single handedly be credited for getting most of us through lockdown and being advocates for local breweries.

Hopsters is small, with internal seating for roughly 10 people but outside seating for more at the weekend.

After an extensive refurbish in July 2021, The UB reopened and offers, in their words: a unique community venue in the heart of Chelmsford, boasting gorgeous and traditional décor as well as 10 taps and 3 hand pumps, including classic and unusual draught and cask beers.

They also have a fantastic beer garden, and offer live music and DJ events.

The Orange Tree is our first Traditional Pub on the beer mile, and is known for serving up well kept Cask ales. This Gray & Sons pub was taken over by a new landlord in early 2023 and continues to be a wonderfully run Chelmsford pub. This cozy pub has a large interior with plenty of seating for your Beer Mile group!
They host a yearly Beer Festival which offers Cask Ale, Bottled & Boxed Ciders and German Lagers.

Brewhouse & Kitchen opened in the famous Grade II listed Anne Knight Building in March 2023 and is by far the largest of the bars on the Chelmsford Beer Mile.

Offering a range of their own in house brewed beers, guest beers, cocktails and food, it's a great for bite to eat in the middle of the mile!

The Ale House

The Ale House is a staple of the Chelmsford Beer Scene. Opening in 2012, it has been Chelmsford's largest independent Ale House and continues to be one of the top spots for local and national Cask and Keg beer.
​
They boast two house beers, a Pale Ale from Chelmsford's own Radio City Beer Works, and a House Bitter by the same name, from Leigh on Sea Brewery. They host a monthly quiz, a monthly 'regional takeover' and other beer launches and sporting events.
​
The pub offers a huge seating area, with tables for large groups too, and is an advocate for local beer.

Hot Box Live Events is Chelmsford top Independent Music Venue. They support fantastic local, national and international upcoming acts as well as hosting top acts like Frank Turner and Fat Boy Slim.

Hot Box have 4 taps of craft beer, with a permanent line of their own Pale Ale brewed by local craft brewery Radio City Beer Works, as well as Utopian Lager and two ever changing taps, plus a wider range of craft cans, often from Pretty Decent, Brew York and other top UK craft breweries.

Radio City Social is Chelmsford's first city centre Taproom and part of local craft microbrewery Radio City Beer Works. They boast 18 taps of modern craft beer, including many of their own beers brewed here in Chelmsford, alongside a permanent lines of: Gluten Free, Belgian, Lager and Nitro Stout as well as US imports.

A self confessed 'rock music and craft beer bar', Radio City Social hosts many events including Metal Nights, Open Mic, Tap Takeovers, Tasting evenings and monthly interactive quiz, and has attracted some great local tribute acts and cover bands.

We recommend this as the last stop on the beer mile due to the range of beer available to try, and the late night license the bar has.
